800 year chain mail discover in Longford county,

Amazing article on finding this chain mail.  I can't   get over the size.  It much smaller than I thought. But I understand today people are much larger.

An 800-year-old vest of chain mail, known as a hauberk, has been discovered in Co Longford.

The historical artefact was discovered at an unknown location in the county.

It is currently being held by local tourist attraction, Granard Knights & Conquests, before it goes to the National Museum of Ireland.

It lay in a shed until this week when the person who found it attended a Norman People event at Granard Knights & Conquests as part of National Heritage Week.

After seeing a replica of chain mail at the event last weekend, a member of the public came forward stating they had discovered something similar.

The artefact was handed over this week and General Manager Bartle D'Arcy has already been in touch with the National Museum of Ireland to declare it and begin the process of its restoration.

Mr D'Arcy explained that, while the artefact was not discovered in Granard or at Granard Motte, it was dug up from a drain in an area close by.

"We think it's related to the Motte because chain mail is expensive," he explained.

"Yesterday I was in the National Museum and declared it an artefact because it's the property of the State and they're going to come and look after it for us."

Tourism and Education Officer at Granard Knights & Conquests Deirdre Orme said that the hauberk is "an absolutely amazing discovery".

"We're completely blown away with it here in Knights & Conquests in Granard. And it completely links into what we're doing here at the centre - tapping into our Norman history and heritage," she said.

The hauberk dates to approximately 1172 when the Normans arrived in Longford, linking in with the story of Richard De Tuite and the construction of the timber-frame castle on the motte in 1199.

To discover a hauberk in such good condition and intact is rare.

"We have the entire hauberk," said Mr D'Arcy who, when he first heard of the artefact, thought it would be just a fragment of chain mail.

"To have the original thing here is just beyond belief and particularly during Heritage Week."

Sword Point rules 2nd Edition

I have both the first and second edition.  The rule set is not your typical I go - you go system.  My first impression are that the rules are not over complicated.  Some ancient thru Medieval can drive one mad. Saga I enjoy but it is hard to find people interested in this type of game play.  Also when the author bought out the second edition player went mad.   Here is a video review of the Second edition. Feel free to post comments.  Enjoy the video...

Advanced Squad leader scenario "The Puma Prowls"

Great video on plan ASL.  I know some folks hate the game.  But it is fun with a long learning curve.

Blogger changes that effect the blog.

Blogger strikes again.   I shouldn't complain as blog is free. But they do make a chunk of money off the ads.

Note:  The blogs list is now limited to the latest 10 recent posts. To see the other you have to check on the list to see them.

Added dealers to the list is an exercise of jumping through loops and cursing.  So be patient as it take time to up date the list.

As you know if you have been following the blog.  I got a nasty infection in my leg.  Since 4 days in the hospital on VI's pumping to type of meds in my vain.   Been home for a week now.  My 3d prints have been turned out 40k structures of Kill team.  Being in 28mm scale.  The prints take a day to run.  Unless something screws up.  Hoping to sell these to make some income.  Why you say. My 3 yrs Refrigerator died from power surge.  Yes I forgot I lost power for two days.   To our surprise there is a shortage of refrigerators.  It seems no one want to work because of the extra money for the government.   Looks like we have to prepare for shortage over the winter.   Sorry for the rant.

SO long for now

What do with the 3d filament spools

It is amazing now many filaments one can acquire from 3d prints.   The question is what the heck do you do with them.  I've got stacks of  them.  The answer was on thingverse.  I was trolling the sight of a project and found citadel paint holder.  A simple fix yes.   But it got a little more involved. As the all the makers spools are of different center diameter.   I had a few hatchbox spools the fit the bill.

Download the files and I was off running.

3d print of Hougomount

I have been asked about Hougomount farm set.  It is a massive complex.  The farm complex would take up pretty much a gaming table.   Plus it is expensive.  The run time would be over a month of constant printing..

3d print of the Farm House at Quartre-Bras

The print is the Farm House at the cross roads of Quartre-Bras.   The Farm is in V shape configuration.

Here is a link to the walking tour of the Battlefield.  Quatre-Bras walking tour

This is not Houg

Last photo every taken of farm.  The next day it was wore down

Speira Miniatures of Sweden

Found the figure company on TMP today.    Here is a link: Speira Miniature

The miniature can be made in any scale.   Good way to fill any voids in your artillery or units.

Who are we? We are Christian and Helen and we live in the south part of Sweden. We started this miniature adventure together with Amos in back in early 2018 where he contacted us with an idea to create figures for his dioramas. We had a resin printer and were eager to see what could be done. Many figures later, we three decided to start this venture to enable anyone to get the models we developed. We run Speira Miniatures in our spare free time, we both work full time at other work as well (within customer service).

Sadly our friend Amos at the age of 40 passed away from a stroke on the 13th of December 2019. People all around the world have expressed their condolences and some still give us encouraging words which warms us. We have a great gratitude for Amos initiative to start Speira Miniatures with us and his commitment to developing these figures. His extensive academic background with Masters in History, Religion and Pedagogy and his love for history shaped us. We remember his great ideas and vision, kindness, generosity and enthusiasm. A great friend and he is greatly missed and we can only hope he is looking down at the progress of these miniatures and that we are able to continue with them.

Our intention is to continue the legacy of Amos work in his memory, so these miniatures will live on and be the joy of many. We will carry on as long as it is possible for us.

  • Check your blood pressure, rarely any symptoms. High pressure is a huge factor, the biggest contributor to the risk of stroke.
  • Get yourself checked for diabetes, early on no symptoms.

Sedgwick's Charge Saturday July 4, 1863

This is from the Johnny Reb blog  "Charge!"

Civil War Scenario books for Johnny Reb

Have just played a Civil War battle using Black Powders rule.  I came across these scenario books for Johnny Reb by Brad Butkovich.  I believe the books would  be great using the new War Lord 12mm ACW miniatures.   ACW battle Scenario books

New Gettysburg regimental-level scenario book!

Summer Storm

Talented wargame scenario designer Brad Butkovich is among the upper echelon of today’s generation of Civil War regimental-level wargamers. The Georgia-based Butkovich is well known to Charge! readers from his previous series of excellent scenario books, mostly based upon battles in the Western Theater.

Now, Brad has produced an interesting new booklet covering various actions at the July 1-3, 1863, battle of Gettysburg. It’s an area of keen personal interest to me! Some of you may recall a two-volume set, Enduring Valor: Gettysburg in Miniature, which I wrote for my friend and graphic designer Ivor Janci more than a decade ago. They have long been out of print, so Brad’s fresh look at the battle is much appreciated and timely.

Here is the table of contents for this book, which may be the first in a series (let’s all hope!). Brad’s research is compelling and accurate, and his take on how to break up the battlefield into bite-sized scenarios is of strong interest to Civil War gamers everywhere. The scenarios are adaptable for almost every major regimental-level rules set. They are designed for 15mm gaming, but of course can be modified for other figure scales.  Brad also presents data for rules based upon 10-minute, 15-minute, and 20-minute time intervals per turn.

TOC

Each scenario begins with a short historical introduction to set the context for the action.  To use Brad’s words from the book, “This includes a brief summary of the number of units and how long the game might take to play. It also includes the size of the game table. The scale for each map is approximately 33 yards per inch. While this might seem unusual, the size and frontage of regiments in most miniature games are too large. Since the majority of players will have their units based on this incorrect frontage, the maps are designed with this in mind, fitting the maps to the actual frontages of the miniatures themselves. Those players that have units based on the correct frontage will still be able to use the maps with little or no modification.”

Each scenario contains a detailed description of any special terrain rules (the landscape, fencing, watercourses, and roads/farm lanes all played an important role in the battle of Gettysburg). For example, in all scenarios, “Units in wheatfields and cornfields receive an additional cover bonus if they are lying prone.”

KeyBrad then describes the basic setup of the table in terms of starting troop deployment, reinforcement schedules, morale and ammunition levels if unusual, effect of special officers, etc.

terrain map

He then gives the scenario-specific victory conditions. “Common to all the scenarios is inflicting casualties on your opponent. Each unit has a Victory Point value. When a player eliminates, captures, or forces an opposing unit off the board they receive the Victory Point value. Victory Point values are:
 1 Point for each artillery section
 2 Points for each infantry regiment
 3 Points for each cavalry or mounted infantry regiment
 3 point for each brigade commander
 5 points for each division commander
 7 points for each corps commander
 10 points for each army commander”

Finally, he presents a detailed order of battles based upon the most current research as to what units were present at what time and in what strength.

OOB

All told, Summer Storm is sure to be a new classic standard for recreating Gettysburg on the miniature tabletop in regimental scale! Copies will be available on amazon.com and other leading hobby sales channels.
