We are in the Middle (10th-17th Decemeber 1899) of what was called "A Black Week" for the British Army during the 2nd Boer War.
These three battles – Stormberg, Magersfontein and Colenso – shook late-Victorian Britain. The British Army suffered almost 3,000 casulaties.
Esteemed Historian Dr Spencer Jones of Wolverhampton University tells the story of Black Week - the battles, the generals and the mistakes.
Excellent presentation and well delivered. Black Week has almost come to symbolise the Boer War to the uninformed observer and it's usually forgotten how successfully the British Army adapted its strategy and tactics to counter the unique nature of the Boer threat. In doing so, it arguably created a force that was better prepared to deal with the German onslaught of 1914?
