As a base, I often use 3mm hardboard. This is just a scrap piece I had on my workbench. Marked out the features with a whiteboardpen.

cut out the shapes with a knife and chamfered the edges

Glued some 10mm thick expanded polystyrene to the bases, and left them to dry for an hour or two.

Cut the expanded polystyrene with a craftsknife, making sure to get a smooth surface. Aim here is to not make any vertical edges.

Glued sand over the pieces, and left it to dry for a while.

Glued on some kitty litter, and left it to dry. Then I went over the kitty litter again with some heavily watered down white glue, as to make sure it would not fall off. left this to dry overnight.

Painted the pieces in a black basecoat.

The next layers of paint was: Brown on the whole piece Grey where the stones are Homemade black/brown wash over the stones.

Drybrush with a light grey over the stones, and a sand colour over the earth.

Static grass (two shades) and some clump foilage was added using white glue. The pieces was then sprayd with a matt clear coat, so the static grass wont fall off that easily. And the pieces are done
