Only the first 2500 box set of Squad Leader were the color purple.
Avalon Hill was rushing to print "Squad Leader" to Premiere at the Origins Wargame Con in Baltimore. In the rush the first printing used the ink color "on press" at that time to save time -- the ink color was purple -- it was all by chance.
