 The Civil War created the ironclads and tinclads.  With happened most from because of the introduction on the new projectiles.  The days of round shot where on the way out. These rounds tend to bounce off the target because of the round shape.   The shell off Fort Pulaski show both the Confederate and Union force the new shot was capable penetrating  deep in brick wall with easy.  The same went for wooden ships.

ACW Ironclad ship ID pennant's

 Union ships flew pennant's during the battle that where unique to the ship.  Here is a example of these flags. Note 1st division on the left and 2nd division on the right. Hope this is useful information.
