Too close...
Who was carrying this Springfield Armory Model 1861 rifle-musket when it was hit by a minie ball? What battle was it? Unfortunately, many of the Civil War rifle-musket "Mishaps" we have in our collection are without detailed records. Was this due to the large number of rifle-muskets coming back to the Armory from the battlefield? Another mystery unsolved.
Looks like it was being carried at Order Arms being as the ramrod is bent too. The surrounding spatter of hot lead fragments would have driven home just how close a call that was!
